Cholesterol: The Good, the Bad and the [Tri]gly[ceride]

It’s National Cholesterol Education Month

High Cholesterol is a major health concern in America, with over 29 million people having levels that are considered unsafe ( >=240mg/dL). It is recommended that cholesterol levels be <=200mg/dL.

Cholesterol is a fat. It is required by our body for several functions, including brain function, vitamin metabolism, and digestion. It is only found in animal food sources. The body has the ability to create it’s own though, so if only eating vegetables, you can still make cholesterol. There are two types of Cholesterol, HDL and LDL. I’ll give some brief explanation to both.

LDL(low-density lipoprotein)- This is considered the BAD cholesterol. Increased levels of this in the blood can lead to fat build up in arteries, and consequently, heart attacks and strokes.

HDL(high-density lipoprotein) – this is considered the GOOD cholesterol. Increased levels of this in the blood can show to be protective against heart attacks and strokes. Low levels trend with an increase in heart disease. HDL function within the body against LDL cholesterol, helping to remove it. So if this cholesterol is high, it’s ok.

Triglyceride- this is the most common fat in the body, and increased levels of this also, like LDL, can lead to increased risk of heart disease, stroke and heart attacks.

High LDL cholesterol and high triglycerides can be prevented by:

·         Eating a heart-healthy diet ( Full of vegetables/fruit, WHOLE GRAINS, lean meat, and healthier oils and fat choices, like olive oil and avocados)

·         Getting more exercise

·         Quitting Smoking

·         If overweight, losing weight

“But I’m a raw vegan and run marathons, my cholesterol is fine.”

Even if you think you have no chance of having high cholesterol, it’s important to get this checked annually by your doctor because it can also be a genetic issue, so if you have a family history of such, it’s best to get checked.

A diet higher in fiber is a proven and safe way to help lower bad cholesterol levels, so be sure to eat you vegetables and whole grains.
